Farm Journal
Good afternoon from the farm!
This past Saturday, we and the Liberty Prairie Foundation hosted a Sunset Stroll for Prairie Crossing neighbors. It was a chance for neighbors, who may see the farm activity from atop the surrounding berms, to see the farm up close, walk the fields and listen to the sounds of the farm at night.
Prior to giving the tour, the attendees stood in a circle and they were asked to share their favorite childhood or recent memory of a farm. You could see faces light up! They shared fond memories of sheparding animals at family farms, visiting and caring for Prairie Crossing community goats, and tending crops of sugar cane, vegetables and rice on family farms in India. The farm memories stirred up feelings of joy that were palpable.
Finally, for two minutes, we stood in silence just listening to the sounds on the farm. The cicadas sang loudly, insects buzzed and tickled our arms and leaves rustled overhead. After appreciating the sounds, we found it magical to stand in the company of others whose lives were touched by farms, animals and the natural world. We've missed seeing each of you, our CSA members, and we truly cannot wait to gather together in September with you (see below)!
Enjoy this week's late summer harvest from all of us to you, ~ Jen, Jeff, Abbey, Arlet, Ben, Peggy, Alex, Laura, Katie
CSA Member Gathering
We are hosting a CSA member gathering outdoors on Saturday, September 11th at 12pm. Since we were unable to host in 2020, we warmly invite all 2020 and 2021 CSA members to gather together again here on the farm!
We welcome you to bring your Ravinia-style picnic with food, drinks, and picnic seating. We will offer a family u-pick activity, farm tour, and farmyard games. The event will be casual so please dress comfortably in walking shoes for the farm.
Notes from the Farm Kitchen
This week, we're sharing the Klug's Einset red seedless table grape, which is dark pink with a strawberry like-flavor. Unfortunately, it's been a hard year for this crop. Abby Klug recently shared an update on the grape harvest, "We had a very light crop of seedless grapes this year due to the late frost, and with the extreme heat we have had...they will not be around for very much longer." In the meantime, please savor the delicious flavor!
Poblanos are making an appearance in shares and members may see a variety of shapes, colorations, and sizes due to their ripening process. Rest assured, they are delicious and spicy! We love poblanos in just about everything so here are nine ideas to get you started.
